Mechanical royalties are generated whenever a song is reproduced in any form. The most common mechanical licence is from streaming, but historically, ‘reproduction’ has been in a physical format (print, records, CD, tapes, etc). Artists who record compositions they did not write themselves will owe mechanical royalties to the original composer(s) and publisher(s) See Cover Song for more information.
In Canada, SOCAN RR and CMRRA represent the mechanical rights of songwriters and publishers.
