Intellectual Property (IP) is a broad umbrella referring to any original human creation. There are four categories of IP protection: patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. While a musical artist may trademark a name or logo, and a band may have trade secrets such as a mailing list or contract information, the most common form of IP protection in music comes in the form of copyright.
In Canada, copyright exists the moment a musical creation is recorded in any way (written down, audio recording, video recording etc).
