A record label is a company that works with music artists. Depending on their focus, labels have multifaceted roles including artist development, scouting, artist management, publishing, coordinating production, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, promotion, merchandise, and legal contracts.
In terms of copyright and royalties, labels typically own master recordings and often a percentage of publishing rights. In exchange for turning over these rights, labels help artists to develop their careers and audience through their relationships with radio, streaming, print and TV/Film entities.
